After first introducing children to dot to dots, you may want to offer a little supervision. Encourage kids to seek out the next number in the sequence. Its best to draw a straight, even line from one dot to the other, and dont forget to connect that final dot or the image wont be complete! At the same time, dont insist that everything be "just so." Kids need to be able to experiment and be creative, even if it means coloring outside the lines. Dot to dots have many variations, and some are worked using letter sequences alphabetically rather than numbers while some spell words. The skill level needed ranges from preschool-age on up. Sometimes, its immediately obvious what the picture is, while other designs will keep you guessing almost until the final line is drawn.
However, the temptation to stay within the walls of the fabulous HMV Ritz to see the very much buizzed about Dog is Dead was too much and proved not to be a disappointment. After a quick bit of tucker over at Oddest - a lovely little Oxford Rd bar with a fine selection of ales - it was time to get into the evening of the festival. The highlights of the night, which ran into the very early hours indeed, had to be the always entertaining The Drums at The Ritz, the incredible Lulu James over at Joshua Brookes and finally Islet at the Sound Control live lounge. It has to be said, that as the music shifted the latter hours at the club, things may have gotten a little blurry for some of us - but after a day like this I think its fair to say we deserved it.
Next you will need something to draw with. I like to use a variety of drawing pencils. They are labeled with numbers and letters, like 2H, 2B, 4B, etc. I prefer to use 2B, 4B, and 6B pencils. The larger the number, the softer the graphite. You can get darker blacks with a 6B pencil. Get a few different ones to start with, and over time, youll see which you prefer. The H stands for "hard," and the B stands for "black." You will need erasers to clean up unwanted lines. I use two types. One is a kneaded eraser, which is a gray block. To use it, you pinch it like play dough, to any shape you want, then erase with it. Its perfect when you want to erase just one dot or skinny line of color.
Dont do it! Youre better off picking a name that at first glance has nothing to do with your business than one that the average person cant say without stumbling over his tongue. The reason is simple: if you cant say it you cant remember it much less spell it when needed. And with the coming proliferation of new domain extensions both in Latin Script and Arabic, Cyrillic or whatever, the chances of someone misunderstanding a domain name will increase exponentially. There are plenty of examples of this mistake out there. How many times have you asked someone for their website and theyve told you what it is not once but twice or three times, and youve still left them wondering what it was they had said? Or you left thinking you had it; but when you got to your computer youd either forgotten completely or couldnt get it to render no matter how many likely combinations you tried.
Third- Hold their arm and direct it into large circles. Then, let go of their arm and guide their arm into creating lines, circles and marks on the paper. He or she will love the tactile, warm, interaction with you, and be thrilled that there is color on the paper. Fourth- Praise your child, and point to the marks and let them discover that they have created something by themselves. Smiles will abound. Now you are both ready to draw a person! Whether a child is from Asia, Africa, or America, a pre-school child sees a person as a circle with a face. It is universal. The arms radiate from the sides of the circle. The legs sprout from the bottom of the circle. Take their hand and have them feel their eyebrows, and look into a mirror and point out eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows, ears, and hair. Have them feel their arms, legs and feet. As a child draws and grows, their person will have more detail. Your child will have more of a body concept. Draw eyebrows. Put their hands on their ears, and help them draw the ears. Ask your child to draw hair. It usually will not be attached to the head. To them, the hair is above the head.
I quickly put away the jar, vinegar, and baking soda and moved on to another exercise and another and another. At the end of each mindfulness class, I conclude with the same exercise: lying on your stomach and drawing your happy place. As soon as I announce that we are going to be doing the mindful drawing, they excitedly drop to their tummies and wiggle with the anticipation of a kid on Christmas morning. I pass out the fresh white paper and a can containing shards of crayons. The second their crayons hit the paper, you can hear a pin drop. There is no goofing around, there is no talking, but there is complete mindfulness. For fifteen minutes, they will draw, colour, and become immersed in their creation. Of course the real magic is not what is happening on the paper but rather what is happening in their mind. They are thinking about their happy place and then making it happen on paper - perfect mindfulness. It is the same as when we use guided visualization to enter into meditation.
